Use sports to end drug abuse among youth in Majengo slum
Drug abuse has ravaged many people across the country. The situation is more prevalent among the youth especially those living in the informal settlements. Majengo slum in Kajiado County is among those most affected.
The slum is worst hit by drugs due to a number of challenges faced by the residents. Majority of the youth are unemployed. This has rendered them idle, desperate and frustrated. Most of them now engage in drug abuse out of desperation, joblessness and bad peer pressure. This menace has turned the youth in Majengo to become idle and lazy.
It is therefore unusual that NACADA has named Kajiado County as a hot spot of drug smuggling given that Namanga Road is a transit route to neighboring Tanzania. Sports is a good way of disengaging most of the youth from drug abuse. At least their minds will be preoccupied in the games and help them enhance their talents and explore other avenues that can earn them a living. Sports help them gain mental and physical health wellbeing.
It is a platform where youth can come together and share their personal life experiences. This way, anti-drugs messages and prevention measures can be communicated to them. The risks involved in drug abuse such as HIV / Aids infections, crime and death are also relayed. Coaches, players and sponsors of sports tournament in Kajiado should come together to help the affected youth. Sports will help in reducing cases of drug abuse.
When they attend trainings up to sunset, they get tired and will only want to sleep when they get home instead of engaging in drugs or looking for them. The tournaments introduced by sponsors, have made some youth busy and focused. The winning clubs can be trained on how to invest the money they get from sponsors so that they are not tempted to spend it on drugs.
This will make them discover their talents in sports such as football, athletics, basketball, hokey, javelin, rugby among others.
