Slum Light Wazee, Light Queens scoop SUN tournament trophy
Slum light dominated SHOFCO Urban Network (SUN) Zone A tournament to win men and women volleyball tournament staged at Kamkunji in Gatwekera, Kibera. Soweto-based team, Slum Light Wazee, registered impressive results against their opponents in all matches to finish top in the tournament that brought together six teams from Sarang’ombe Ward.
The team secured its first win against Raila Young Stars by winning two sets of 15-11 and 15-9 in the opening match before beating Maskini Achoki by two sets of 10-3 and 11-10. Wazee won the first set easily but the second one was highly contested. Gatwekera-based side, Kamiwa fell by two sets of 15-6 and 15-3 in the hands of Slum Light Wazee.
In another best of three volleyball sets, Slum Light Wazee was pushed to the wall by their name sake, Slum light Lions but luckily overwhelmed them by two sets of 18-17 and 17-16. Slum Light Lions settled for the 2nd position following their win in six sets against three teams.
Lions smashed Raila Young Stars by two sets of 10-5 and 10-8 before thrashing Ushirikiano by two sets of 10-6 and 10-3. Ushirikiano kicked off the first set in high spirit but lacked concentration in the game which cost them heavily. Slum Light Queens brought down their arch rivals, Mapambano by two 2 sets of 11-9 and 10-6 in the final to win in the ladies’ category.
Mapambano finished with 4 points ahead of Nyota. SUN Zone A officials chose a number of players who will represent them in the final which will bring together all SUN members from Zone B, C and D in October.
